Red Bull Flugtag returns to Miami this Saturday, and the goal for most of the 30 teams is simple: get as far as possible over Biscayne Bay before hitting the water. Most entries are expected to crash, but organizers say every team will splash.
The competition is free to watch at Bayfront Park, with gates opening at 10 a.m. Teams launch homemade flying contraptions from a 30-foot ramp. Judges score flight distance, creativity and showmanship. Miami personality Mr. Red is hosting.
Several teams previewed their entries. A group of Pitbull impersonators plans to dance to “Damn, I Love Miami.” A team backed by Sanguich restaurants and the “A Day in Miami” podcast wants to fly what it calls the world’s largest Cuban sandwich. Another group from FIU’s engineering program, team IEEE, says its design uses triangular bracing and a lightweight frame to catch air under the wing.
Organizers said the event is as much a show as a contest. Spectators can expect plenty of splashes, and the pilots will need a towel and dry clothes afterward. If you cannot make it to the bay, the organizers said a video of the event will be posted online soon.
