Crime is trending down in the City of Miami, according to department data, and Police Chief Edwin Lopez credits a mix of technology, patrols and officers on the street. Lopez spoke more than 100 days into his tenure.
Data show overall crime fell 3% and violent crime dropped 7% between June 15 and Sept. 22, compared with the same period in 2025. Lopez said the gains reflect a collective effort that includes previous administrations and the current force.
The department has expanded its use of drones and surveillance cameras and increased patrols. Since taking office, Lopez has visited all 13 city neighborhoods. He said most residents tell him they feel safer.
Not every category improved. Assault and battery, along with larceny and theft, stayed relatively unchanged over the same period.
Lopez did not say how the department would respond if Amendment 3 passes on Nov. 3 and changes its funding. He said the department would deal with that challenge when it arrives.
For his next 100 days, Lopez plans to build on current patrol and technology strategies. He also hinted at more public safety initiatives tied to the holiday season and promised details in the coming weeks.
