Florida International University and the Knight Foundation honored two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Manny Garcia for decades of investigative journalism. The ceremony was held at the university in Miami-Dade County, and the source story does not give an exact date.

Garcia was named last year as the first Knight Foundation Executive Director of FIU’s Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media. During the event, the Ansin Foundation, the Channel 7 Foundation and the Channel 18 Foundation announced a $1 million donation to support and expand journalism education.

The Ansin Foundation was established in 1957 by the late Ed Ansin, co-founder of Sunbeam Television and owner of WSVN and ABC Miami. The Channel 7 and Channel 18 foundations were set up by Ansin’s sons, Andrew and James.

Garcia said the gift will help mentor the next generation of journalists at the university. He called it a legacy gift.

Brian Schriner, dean of the College of Communication, Architecture and the Arts, said the money will go to students and faculty. Scholarships will help students take part in the university’s Washington bureau and strengthen local news coverage, he said.

The Lee Caplin School offers undergraduate and graduate courses in journalism, broadcasting and digital and interactive media.
