A 14-year-old boy is in serious condition after an SUV struck him while he rode his bicycle along Jog Road in Boynton Beach, according to his father, Mitch Malizio. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the SUV driver stayed at the scene.
Malizio said the SUV was pulling out of a shopping plaza when it hit his son, Macen. He said the boy suffered broken ribs, facial lacerations and a shattered pelvis that will require surgery. Malizio said it is unclear whether Macen will walk again.
Malizio said he rushed to Delray Medical Center, where he was told to wait while his son was evaluated. He described the moment as terrifying for any parent.
Investigators have not determined what caused the crash or whether the driver is at fault.
Malizio is asking drivers to slow down, look around and put their phones away, especially near shopping plazas and busy roadways where bicyclists travel.
