A retired U.S. Army specialist and local volunteer received a Halloween surprise that will help his family: a new car and a two-year scholarship to Miami Dade College.

Roy Mora was honored at a surprise presentation during Friday’s Miami Heat game. Lithia Motors, the Military Warrior Support Foundation and Chase Bank made the gifts possible through a partnership.

Mora served four years in the Army, including a 2012 deployment to Afghanistan, and earned several honors during his service. He has been married for 15 years and is the father of five children, whom he homeschools. He also volunteers with nonprofit groups that support families facing hard times.

Mora said he and his family were grateful for the help. “We are very happy and very grateful for everybody that came here together and worked hard to make this possible for my family to have a dependable car, a dependable vehicle that takes a lot of weight off our shoulders,” he said.

The vehicle is expected to provide reliable transportation for the family, and the scholarship will support Mora’s educational goals.
