Lake Worth Beach City Commissioner Sarah Malega has resigned to become executive director of the Palm Beach County League of Cities. She submitted a resignation letter to City Manager Troy Perry, effective immediately. The letter is dated Thursday.

Malega represented District 1 since March 2021 and won re-election in 2024. In her letter, she called serving on the commission an “honor” and said she valued working closely with city staff to deliver services and resources to residents. The League of Cities already lists her as executive director.

Mayor Betty Resch has called a special meeting for Monday at 7 p.m. so the commission can declare the seat vacant. Residents who want to serve the rest of the unexpired term must be qualified and live in District 1. They can email the City Clerk at cityclerk@lakeworthbeachfl.gov with a declaration of interest and proof of residency. The deadline to apply is Thursday at 3 p.m.

Resch praised Malega as a “tireless advocate” for District 1 and the entire city. The five-member commission will need to fill the vacancy after the seat is declared open.

The League of Cities, chartered in 1969 as a nonprofit, includes all 39 municipalities in Palm Beach County and more than 80 associate members. It advocates for local governments.
