A dolphin tangled in a net in Biscayne Bay was rescued by North Bay Village and Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol units on Wednesday afternoon, after residents alerted 911.

Ahmed Raul Perez said his wife first saw the animal from the window of their apartment. Noticing it was not swimming normally, the couple used a drone to get a closer look and saw that its tail was caught in netting. The dolphin’s head was bobbing above the water while its tail stayed underwater.

Perez, who spoke to 7News in Spanish, said the dolphin was sinking under the weight of the net. He believes it would have died without help.

Officers arrived within minutes. Perez used his drone to guide them to the animal, and neighbors also helped point it out from above. Several Marine Patrol members went into the water and removed the netting from the dolphin’s tail.

The dolphin swam away after it was freed. North Bay Village officials said the animal appears to be uninjured.
