A man and a woman are dead after what Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputies describe as an apparent murder-suicide at an apartment complex in northeast Miami-Dade County.

Deputies from the Intracoastal District responded to the complex in the 17000 block of Northeast 14th Avenue, near North Miami Beach High School. They found two people inside an apartment with gunshot wounds, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced both dead.

Sheriff’s spokesman Daniel Castillo said the man lives in the apartment and the woman did not. Investigators say the woman came to pick up her belongings. After he let her in, he armed himself with a firearm, shot her and then shot himself, Castillo said.

Castillo said no children were in the apartment. Investigators do not yet know whether anyone witnessed the shooting, and homicide detectives are checking whether surveillance video captured it. Asked about earlier incidents at the unit, he said detectives are looking into that and more details would come out later.

The identities of the two have not been released. Castillo said more information was expected Thursday as the investigation continues, and the relationship between the two remains under review.
