Broward County Animal Care is waiving adoption fees for two animals that are looking for homes: Pie, a 3-year-old dog, and S’mores, a 1-year-old calico cat recovering from an injury. Adopters will still pay the required $25 pet registration fee.

Pie is an American Staffordshire terrier mix weighing 25 pounds. Shelter staff say she can be shy with new people but warms up quickly. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and has tested negative for heartworm, and she can go home the same day. A calm household would suit her best.

S’mores arrived at the shelter in late September after being found injured as a stray. Veterinarians found a fracture in her left hind leg. She also completed a 10-day quarantine after scratching the person who found her. Staff say she is walking and putting weight on the leg, which gives them hope that the fracture will heal without amputation. Her adopter will need to provide cage rest while staff monitor her recovery. She will be spayed, vaccinated and microchipped once she is medically cleared for surgery.

The shelter, at 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale, is open for adoptions seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Two upcoming events also offer a chance to meet adoptable pets. The Pup-or-Treat Halloween Pawty runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Fort Lauderdale adoption center. On Sunday, Oct. 25, the agency will hold an in-store adoption event at the PetSmart at 4101 Oakwood Blvd. in Hollywood from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Details are at Broward.org/Animal.
