Democratic gubernatorial nominee David Jolly held his final campaign rally in Broward County on Monday night, asking supporters to turn their frustrations over affordability, education, immigration and civil liberties into votes. The event took place at the Gray Box Theater in Wilton Manors, a few hours before polls opened Tuesday.
Many attendees said they had already voted, while others planned to cast ballots Tuesday. Voters told CBS News Miami they were worried about divisive rhetoric, the rising cost of necessities and the Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention facility. One voter, Susan Alvarez, said residents “can’t buy groceries” and “can’t buy gas.”
Lieutenant governor nominee Gwen Graham introduced Jolly. He described Floridians as “desperate for change” and courted voters across party lines. Jolly, a former Republican who left the GOP in 2018 and registered as a Democrat last year, said many people were looking for a new political home.
The loudest response came when Jolly promised that, on his first day in office, he would fire Florida’s surgeon general. He also said parents across the political spectrum share a desire to keep their children safe.
Polls opened Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 7 a.m.
