A 51-year-old Florida City woman is facing two counts of attempted murder after police say she deliberately drove into a pedestrian in a crosswalk on May 9. The suspect, Tangela Wright, has told investigators the crash was an accident.

Surveillance video shows a white Chevrolet Impala driven by Wright plowing into a man walking in the crosswalk at Davis Parkway and Northwest Sixth Avenue, according to authorities. Police said Wright made a minimal stop before turning left and accelerating toward a couple crossing the street. The man suffered a neck injury and several fractured ribs. The woman with him was not hurt.

The arrest report says the woman told officers she knows Wright and that the two had an ongoing history of personal conflict. She also said Wright admitted, before police arrived, that she had been trying to hit the female victim with her car. Police said Wright’s statement is not consistent with the video.

Wright is out of jail and on house arrest. 7News visited her Florida City home, where the Impala was parked outside. She declined an interview but maintained the crash was an accident. Her trial is expected to begin in February. The surveillance video is likely to be a central piece of evidence at her next court appearance.
