Democrats flipped several Republican-held Florida House seats in South Florida on Election Day, matching forecasts of a blue tide in the midterms. Republicans held on in most other contested races but lost ground in all three counties.
In Miami-Dade, former School Board member Lucia Báez-Geller beat two-term Republican Rep. Fabián Basabe in House District 106 by about 8 percentage points. Basabe had been found liable earlier this year for sexually harassing, battering and defaming two former House employees. In House District 113, Democrat Gloria Romero Roses defeated former County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro with 55% of the vote.
Broward’s two GOP-held House seats also turned blue. Democrat Michael Ferguson won House District 100 with nearly 52%, and Democrat Todd Delmay beat Rep. Hillary Cassel, who had switched from Democrat to Republican less than two months after winning re-election in 2024, 56% to 44%.
Palm Beach County produced the most closely watched result. In House District 94, Democrat Elizabeth Holmes, a public school teacher, ousted Rep. Meg Weinberger, who was known as “MAGA Meg” for her support of Trump, including legislation to rename the county airport after the president. Holmes took about 51%, Weinberger about 48%. House District 93 also flipped when Democrat August Mangeney defeated Rep. Anne Gerwig by nearly 13 points.
The only GOP gain came in House District 87, where Trump-backed Republican Jon Maples edged Democratic Rep. Emily Gregory by 1,138 votes, 50.75% to 49.25%, with all precincts reporting.
In the Senate, Democrats held their seats in most races. Lauren Book won Senate District 30 by 26 points, and David Silvers won Senate District 26 to succeed term-limited Democratic leader Lori Berman. Republican Sens. Ileana Garcia, Alexis Calatayud and Ana Maria Rodriguez won re-election.
