Broward County Animal Care held a Halloween party in Fort Lauderdale that put animals in costumes in front of visitors, with the goal of finding them new homes.
The event, called the Pup or Treat adoption bash, gave people a chance to meet dogs and other animals from the shelter in a relaxed setting. Organizers said that is often the first step for potential adopters who might otherwise not visit the shelter.
Zachary Rinkins of Broward County Animal Care said interaction with the public makes animals more adoptable and more comfortable around people. He said the shelter’s aim is to keep animals in the running for a second chance, and that the county relies on community partners to do it.
Organizers also hope adoptions from the event will free up space at the shelter. The county has raised concerns in recent months about capacity, and adoptions are one of the main ways to make room for incoming animals.
