Residents of the Vitalia community are looking out for one another as flooding and power outages stretch into another day. Neighbors are sharing generator power, charging phones and offering spare beds to friends who have nowhere else to go.

Justine Kennedy said she and her husband, both retired first responders, have been checking on neighbors while dealing with flooding at their own home. Kennedy said her husband has been servicing neighbors’ generators and charging phones for people who need them.

The couple also took in friends Dee Gargiulo and her husband, who had no power and no generator. Kennedy said some friends at the other end of the neighborhood are running low on food and are worried about how long it will take to drain the water and restore electricity.

Kennedy said the rain has eased, but some residents are still waiting for power to return. She said finding a place to stay is difficult because hotels are filling up or are too expensive.

Gargiulo said support from friends, the community and the local fire department has carried her family through the week.
