A 14-year-old boy struck by lightning on a soccer field in August is alive and recovering, and doctors say his father’s quick CPR is the reason. Kevin Sosa was playing near their home in Boynton Beach on Aug. 23 when the sky turned cloudy and lightning hit. His father was nearby and was also affected by the electricity, but the main force went to Kevin.

As Kevin’s mother called for help, his father started CPR right away. Paramedics arrived, took over and rushed Kevin to Delray Medical Center, where he spent weeks in the hospital and celebrated his birthday there. Doctors said Kevin went into cardiac arrest.

Palm Beach Fire Rescue said about 10% of people who go into cardiac arrest survive. Dr. Angela Jones said the CPR Kevin received before paramedics arrived shortened the time his brain went without oxygen, and that his recovery reflects the care he got from his parents and first responders.

Kevin returned to the hospital recently for an emotional ceremony with his parents, first responders and medical team. “Thank you for saving my life,” he told the room full of staff. Heather Havericak said the outcome would not have been possible without everyone there.

The family’s story is a reminder that knowing CPR, and being willing to use it, can make the difference before help arrives.
