The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County has issued a health alert and a no-swim advisory for waterways near Blue Heron Boulevard and Gardens Road in Riviera Beach. The agency also said no water from the area should be used for irrigation. The alert follows a recent wastewater spill at the intersection, which is connected to the C-17 Canal.

Health officials said drinking water is not affected. Residents and visitors who come into contact with the canal or nearby waterways should take precautions until more is known about possible bacterial contamination.

Water with high levels of fecal bacteria can cause disease, infections or rashes, the department said. Anyone who touches the water should wash thoroughly, especially before eating or drinking. Children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems may still be at risk at low concentrations and should avoid any exposure.

The City of Riviera Beach is coordinating testing and cleanup with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. No timeline for when the advisory will be lifted was given.

Residents with questions can call DOH-Palm Beach at 561-837-5900. After-hours calls can be placed to 561-881-1888.
