A lightning bolt struck the roof of a home in Northwest Miami-Dade around dinnertime Tuesday, during a round of severe storms in the area. Surveillance footage captured the strike at the home of Hailey Schafer and Armando Latour.
Schafer was standing outside under the roof when the bolt hit. She said she saw sparks fly beside her and ran toward the front door. “Right above my head. If the roof wasn’t here, it would’ve hit me,” she said.
Latour said he had just pulled his Jeep into the driveway when it happened. He said the strike exploded one of the roof tiles and left it charred. A second camera angle showed the footage going dark as the lightning hit.
Schafer was not injured, but she said she was startled. The video shows how quickly sudden storms can turn dangerous for people outdoors near the home, especially during the rainy season.
