A Kendall teenager has spent more than a decade supporting women with breast cancer in Miami-Dade County, according to a community column written by Anabelle Cejas, president and CEO of Comforting Pink Sisters Inc.
Chloe Cartaya first took part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in 2015, when she was 6, joining her mother, Nilia, and county employees. She joined the nonprofit’s board at 15 and serves as vice president and secretary.
Chloe encourages classmates at Lourdes Academy to write handmade cards for the group’s care packages and runs volunteer sessions where students assemble them. Over the past five years, she has helped distribute more than 1,000 packages and helped raise more than $50,000, the column said. Recipients include patients at the Miami Cancer Institute and Liga Contra el Cáncer.
Chloe also co-founded Melodies and Masterpieces with classmate Gabriela Hernandez. The initiative partners with the Miami Learning Experience School to hold monthly events that introduce children with special needs to music and sensory art.
The organization’s social media accounts and website, comfortingpinksisters.org, list volunteer information and ways to support women with breast cancer.
