A private gathering at a Hialeah apartment complex turned violent late Friday, leaving two men hurt. Police said officers were called around 11:46 p.m. to the 6100 block of West 22nd Court after reports of a violent altercation involving a gun.

According to investigators, Jonatan De Jesus Dzul Aguilar, 42, a guest at a second-floor apartment, began behaving aggressively toward female guests. Police said Idalberto Garcia Cardenas stepped in and told him to stop. Investigators allege Dzul Aguilar then struck Cardenas over the head with a ceramic vase, causing a large contusion.

Police said the two men struggled over a gun that Cardenas had pulled, and it went off, striking Dzul Aguilar in the face. Dzul Aguilar suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Cardenas was taken to Palmetto General Hospital with a non-life-threatening head injury.

After interviewing witnesses, detectives concluded that Cardenas acted in lawful self-defense and defense of others under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. Police said he will not face criminal charges. Dzul Aguilar has been charged with one count of aggravated battery.
