A Hialeah doctor is asking for an investigation after six dead chickens were found outside his medical office building over the past five days.
Dr. Benedicto Fernandez, a rheumatologist, practices at 2140 W. 68th St., across from Palmetto General Hospital. He said he began noticing the dead birds after he started feeding the chickens there on Saturdays. Two were dead in the back of the property that day, and another was thrown away and one more was found dead on the side of the building the following afternoon.
More than a half-dozen roosters near the building appeared unaffected, Fernandez said.
He said he believes the deaths have one of two causes: an infectious disease he cannot identify, or poisoning. He said he leans toward poisoning and plans to file a report with the Hialeah Police Department. He also said the birds should be necropsied.
Miami-Dade Animal Services said it had not received any reports about the dead chickens. Requests for comment sent to the property management company were not immediately returned.
Visitors to the building said the deaths should be investigated. One visitor said the birds could be sick and that the cause should be clarified.
