President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to what he called an “energy ceasefire.” In a social media post Sunday morning, he said the pause took effect immediately and warned both sides not to break it.

There was no immediate confirmation from Russia. The White House had not said how the agreement was reached or what steps would follow, according to CNN. A source close to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN that the announcement was news to Kyiv, but that Ukraine would agree if Russia did.

The announcement follows a deal Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin reached days earlier to supply markets with Russian diesel fuel. That deal drew criticism, and Zelensky sharply condemned it when it was announced Friday. Talks involving Ukrainian and U.S. officials, including Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, began the same day in Miami.

Trump said as recently as Saturday that Ukraine should “get a new leader who can make a deal.” In a Sunday interview with ABC News, Zelensky said Ukraine was open to an energy truce if Russia stopped attacks on its cities and children, and he offered to stop attacking Russian diesel supplies in return.
