Drivers in Miami should plan for lane closures and detours this weekend as crews keep working on the I-395/SR 836/I-95 design-build project. A steel reinforcement structure for a bridge over the Dolphin Expressway (State Road 836) was moved to Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.
Two eastbound lanes between Northwest 17th Avenue and I-95 close at 10 p.m. Saturday. All eastbound lanes at Northwest 17th Avenue close at 11 p.m., and the expressway is expected to reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday. Drivers can exit at Northwest 17th Avenue, head south across Northwest Seventh Street, then turn left on Southwest First Street and right on South Miami Avenue to reach I-95 ramps.
A separate overnight closure affects westbound I-395 toward the Dolphin. All westbound lanes that continue onto westbound SR 836 close at I-95 from 11:59 p.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday. The I-95 connector ramps stay open. Drivers headed to westbound SR 836 can take the I-95 south ramp, exit at Southwest Seventh Street/Brickell Avenue using Exit 1B, turn left on Southwest Eighth Street and re-enter I-95 northbound.
Boat traffic will also be affected. On Sunday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Southwest First Street and West Flagler Street bridges over the Miami River will open on the hour and half hour. Public vessels, tugs and vessels in distress can pass at any time. The U.S. Coast Guard will notify mariners of the temporary changes.
The closures are part of a project to add road capacity, improve traffic flow and safety, and provide better access along the three highways.
