Police seek driver who fatally struck scooter rider near Overtown

Miami police are looking for a dark Toyota Corolla and its driver after a hit-and-run killed a man riding an e-scooter early Tuesday.

Miami police are searching for the driver of a dark-colored Toyota Corolla after a hit-and-run crash killed a man on an e-scooter near Overtown early Tuesday.

The crash happened just before 1 a.m. at Northwest 7th Avenue and Northwest 7th Street, according to investigators. Police identified the victim as Scheber Elias. He was struck by a vehicle that did not stop, and authorities found him lying on the road around 4 a.m. Miami Fire Rescue took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neighbors said Elias lived a few blocks from the intersection and was a familiar presence in the area, often seen sitting outside his apartment.

Investigators released photos of the vehicle they believe was involved. They are looking for a Corolla from model years 2020 through 2025. Police said it likely has extensive windshield damage and possible damage to the front passenger side.
