Miami Fashion Week celebrated its 10th anniversary in October with runway presentations, cultural events and new community initiatives. A writer for Community Newspapers recounted a Saturday spent moving between Coral Gables and the Freedom Tower in downtown Miami.
The day started at Gables Fancy Corner, which hosted a showcase for Cuban watchmaking house Cuervo y Sobrinos. The brand is now headquartered in Switzerland, and owner Mario Giraldi walked guests through the history and craftsmanship of its watches. The showcase was tied to the brand’s long-discussed plan to open a Miami boutique.
That evening, the runway shows moved to the Freedom Tower. The writer praised the Vero Díaz collection, which featured lace, soft monochrome tones and mixed-media florals. The pre-show space included photographs honoring Miami figures in fashion and culture, among them Paquita Parodi of the Parodi Costume Institute.
The anniversary edition also brought fashion to shoppers directly. The first Miami Fashion Week Pop-Up ran Oct. 16 through 18 at 350 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables, hosted by Terranova in partnership with Stitch Lab. More than 20 designers and brands from Latin America and beyond sold ready-to-wear, eveningwear, handbags, shoes and jewelry. Miami Fashion Week also expanded its long-term partnership with Miami Dade College’s Miami Fashion Institute, giving students chances to take part in castings, fittings, production and events.
For South Florida readers, the event shows how the fashion week has grown beyond the runway into local shopping and student training.
