Jurors are deliberating in the trial of former Fort Pierce city manager Nicholas Mimms, who is charged with bid tampering and official misconduct tied to city-owned properties and a nonprofit linked to his niece.

Prosecutors said Mimms used his position to help Lincoln Park Young Professionals, a nonprofit co-founded by his niece, Caleta Scott, win a lease to develop two city-owned properties. They argued Scott received special treatment because of her family relationship with him, creating a conflict of interest.

The defense denied Mimms did anything wrong. Attorneys argued that he and Scott have a distant relationship.

Deliberations began late Wednesday after closing arguments and resumed at 9 a.m. Thursday. Jurors broke for lunch without reaching a verdict. The court has not set a timeline for how long deliberations will last.
