Firefighters from several agencies battled a fire that destroyed an unoccupied structure on Adams Key late Friday night. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue received the call at about 10:52 p.m. and sent four units, including two fireboats and Air Rescue South.

Because the island is remote, crews could only reach the property by water, fire rescue officials said. Air Rescue South flew an aerial assessment of the scene as firefighters approached. When they arrived, the building was already fully engulfed, with heavy black smoke rising from it.

Crews focused on stopping the flames from spreading to nearby structures. Biscayne National Park, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Ocean Reef Fireboat and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol also assisted.

No injuries were reported. Fire rescue officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
