Right-wing activists James O’Keefe and Cam Higby recorded an attempt at “voter vouching” at the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections office, a practice that is not allowed in Florida, according to election officials.
The pair had been charged with felony unlawful voting and identity theft in Minnesota earlier this week. They were testing Minnesota’s vouching system, which lets a registered voter vouch for newly moved voters. Vouching is legal there, but not in Florida.
O’Keefe Media posted an edited video of nearly five minutes on YouTube this week. In it, O’Keefe tells staff, “I am the ID,” and says, “This is Florida, we’re not in Minnesota.”
Supervisor of Elections Wendy Sartory Link said O’Keefe told staff he planned to vouch for his wife. Employees explained that vouching is not part of Florida law and listed the identification required to register. Without a driver’s license or state ID, a applicant can provide a Social Security number or state that they have never been issued either one.
Link said the two eventually left and that she believes the visit was a test of the system. No charges have been filed. Link said her staff “followed the law exactly how they’re trained.”
