Miami Carnival is moving north to Broward County for the first time, with its main events set for Oct. 10 and 11 at Central Broward Park in Lauderhill. The weeklong Caribbean celebration builds to J’Ouvert on Saturday and the Carnival parade and fete on Sunday.

Organizers said the parade will start at Broward Regional Park, outside the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center, and end at a large fete with live music and performances. Asa Sealy, a Carnival organizer, said the event was chosen to reach the large Caribbean American community in Broward.

Food is a major draw. Sealy said vendors will offer samples of chicken, goat, duck, conch and shrimp, and that the menu goes beyond Trinidadian dishes. Joy’s Roti Delight is among the food vendors.

Designer Lila Nikole said her costume line this year, called Amazonia, uses Kelly green, neon and hot pink, inspired by the rainforest. DJ Rocksteadyy, who will spin soca throughout the week, said she plans to wear one of Nikole’s costumes.

Tickets start at $70. Event details and ticket information are available through the Miami Broward One Carnival website.
