Florida Panthers captain Alexander Barkov received the Key to the City of Boca Raton on Thursday afternoon. Mayor Andy Thomson presented the award at a ceremony where many fans came to meet the team’s all-time franchise points leader.
Barkov has lived in Boca Raton since he was 18, his first season with the Panthers. Speaking with WPTV Panthers 360 host Mike Trim, he said the city feels like home, and he named the beaches, the parks and Mizner Park as favorites. He said nearly every park has a tennis court, and he plays often.
Panthers television play-by-play announcer Steve Goldstein emceed the event.
Barkov is out six to eight weeks while rehabbing a leg injury. He told Trim he received encouraging news after the team’s road trip and hopes to return to the ice as soon as possible. He said he is in good hands with the team’s medical staff.
