Charges have been dropped against a Broward County high school basketball coach who was accused of illegally renting out a school gym for tournaments. Shaune Cannon, 51, had been charged with two felonies in February.

Cannon was one of six coaches arrested in connection with about $6,000 in unauthorized rentals of school facilities in Broward. Authorities said the coaches hosted four events and charged $1,500 for each, keeping the money for themselves.

Attorneys for Cannon argued that he was authorized to use the gym on weekends. They said it was unclear whether he knew he could not collect money from outside groups.

A memo from the State Attorney’s Office said prosecutors could not establish the higher level of criminal intent needed for the charges to stand. The memo was cited in WSVN’s report on the case.

The case drew attention to how school facilities are rented and who is allowed to collect payment for their use, a question that affects coaches, athletes and families across the county.
