Hopping 4 A Cure will bring its Recess Olympics South Florida to Boca Raton on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clive Daniel Home, 1351 NW Boca Raton Blvd.

The event features playground games, including hopscotch, four square, jump rope and hula hoop competitions. Hopscotch events include speed, endurance and head-to-head challenges, plus an obstacle course relay designed for players of all abilities.

The nonprofit grew out of a joke in October 2010. Two Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School juniors from Coral Springs, David Nassau and Gary Wexler, showed up to school in suits and declared themselves varsity hopscotch players. Three months later, they and Nassau’s mother, Marla Jaffe, held their first fundraising tournament for multiple sclerosis families. Nassau’s father had lived with the disease since David was in elementary school. The group now has more than 10 chapters nationwide.

Proceeds will be split between Hopping 4 A Cure and the Arielle Anacker Cancer Foundation, based in Coconut Creek. The foundation helps families of children with cancer pay household bills and funds cancer research. Its founder, Diane Trivelli, started it in 2009 in memory of her daughter, Arielle, who died in 2001 after a three-year battle with Ewing’s sarcoma.

Registration costs $20 per participant and includes a personal fundraising page. Schools, businesses and community groups can form teams, and students can earn community service hours. Sponsorships start at $100. Registration and donation details are available at recessolympics.org.
