A Sweetwater man was arrested after police said he threw two pet birds at a woman during a domestic dispute on Oct. 17, injuring both animals and bruising the woman.

According to an arrest report, the woman returned home from work around 8 p.m. She told investigators that Serguey Hernandez Bauza, 49, was intoxicated and asked her, “Who do you love more, the bird or me?” When she did not answer, police said he grew agitated and began yelling.

Investigators said he grabbed two birds from a cage and threw them at her, striking her in the lower abdomen. He then picked them up and threw them again, hitting her four times in the abdomen and back, the report said. The woman suffered a bruise on her upper right arm. One bird was bleeding from its beak, and the other had a broken beak.

Police said Hernandez Bauza left the home on foot. On Oct. 26, he contacted detectives and agreed to meet at the Mall of the Americas, where he was taken into custody.

He was charged with animal cruelty with intent to injure or kill and domestic violence battery. A judge found probable cause and set his bond at $6,000.
