Phat Boy Sushi in Coral Springs has been temporarily closed after a state inspection found live flying insects inside the restaurant at 2702 North University Drive.

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation conducted a routine inspection on October 22 and cited nine violations. Four were high priority, one was intermediate and four were basic. The inspection record lists an emergency order recommendation and a temporary closure. The report does not give a date for reopening.

According to the report, an inspector saw flying insects near a kitchen handwashing sink and a fryer. One landed in an open package of sliced cheese, and inspectors ordered the affected food stopped from sale. Another landed on a bottle of spicy mayonnaise, which the operator removed for cleaning and sanitizing. Inspectors marked the insect violation as a repeat violation.

Other citations involved raw food stored above ready-to-eat items. Inspectors found raw beef above edamame in the walk-in freezer and raw fish above ready-to-eat sauces in a sushi-station cooler. They also noted food debris on a knife rack near the ice machine, debris on the outside of the warewashing machine and standing water in a sushi-station cooler.

Inspectors removed an employee bag from a sushi prep table and a handleless plastic container that staff had used to scoop coffee grounds. The scoop violation was also marked as a repeat issue.
