A Girl Scout troop is back at Pleasant City Elementary School in West Palm Beach, giving local girls a chance to make friends, learn new skills and build confidence after the school lost its earlier troop.

The Related Ross Foundation stepped in to restart the troop. Executive Director Jeremy Morse said he learned that students at the school no longer had a way to take part in Girl Scouts, and he saw an opportunity to bring it back so the girls could keep going.

The new group is already learning the Girl Scout sign and promise, and the girls have started earning patches. Students said they want to work together on goals and help others. Fourth grader Tanisha Smith said the program teaches girls to be ladylike and to help people. Classmate Kennedy Harper said she expects the troop to help her make more friends.

Lisa Johnson, chief executive of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, said girls should have access to what the program offers. She said it helps girls develop courage, confidence and character that will last their whole lives.

The troop has a new leader, and the girls are still deciding what they want to accomplish together.
