A young girl was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital after the family’s American pit bull bit her Wednesday night at a home in the 1700 block of Northwest 66th Street, in an unincorporated part of Miami-Dade County.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies and Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene. The sheriff’s office said a deputy was approached by the dog when officers arrived, so the deputy used a Taser to stop a second attack. The dog was not struck and ran off. Its whereabouts were unknown as of late Wednesday.

The dog’s owner, who asked not to be identified, said she came home to learn the dog had bitten the child. She described the pit bull as usually calm and friendly, especially around children, and said she did not know what set it off. A neighbor said she saw the dog attacking the girl and that the child was bleeding heavily from her arm.

The girl’s condition was not clear late Wednesday. 7News cameras captured blood on walls near the efficiency where the dog was kept, and a dog that looked similar wandering the street near the home. Miami-Dade Animal Services did not respond to a request for comment that night.
