The YWCA South Florida honored community leaders, programs and a new class of trailblazers Saturday evening at its sixth annual “First But Not Last” celebration, according to WSVN 7News.
Among those recognized was Barry University President Mike Allen. He said the students are the reason residents should feel optimistic about the future, and he accepted his award on behalf of the university’s faculty, staff and the wider Miami community.
This year’s theme, “We The Women: Finishing the Sentence the Founders Started,” reflects the group’s mission and the fundraiser’s role in supporting its work across South Florida. That work includes early education, youth development, and health and economic prosperity.
Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County, said the two organizations share a goal of moving individuals and families forward and plan to keep working together.
Guests dressed in fashion-forward looks for the event. Olivia Diventi, a 7News anchor, served as emcee. The evening also included an immersive “impact experience” with stories from families the YWCA serves.
