A 27-year-old Weston man was arrested Monday and charged with digital voyeurism and trespassing in an unoccupied structure or conveyance, according to a Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit.
Deputies responded to a home in Weston on Sunday around 9:30 p.m. after a woman reported seeing a cellphone pointed through a shower window into her bathroom. She told investigators she screamed after spotting the phone, which alerted her family.
Surveillance footage showed a man dressed in black walking toward the house while holding a cellphone, then running from the area and returning to a nearby residence. Investigators identified the suspect as Joel Luis Rivera, who lived in the same neighborhood, after tracing a pickup truck seen in the recordings.
Rivera told deputies he had entered the backyard to “go by the lake” and ran after hearing someone scream because he “freaked out,” the affidavit states. Deputies also said footage from Oct. 21 and Oct. 24 showed a man matching his description approaching the same home with a cellphone. Investigators said his phone matched the one the woman described.
The case is a reminder for Broward residents to check window coverings and report anyone seen near homes after dark.
