Construction on a new $48 million elementary school in Westlake remains on time and on budget, project leaders said, despite recent heavy rain and flooding at the site.
WPTV reporter Christy Waite toured the site in August, when much of the school was still a concrete slab. When she returned on Friday, the building had risen from the ground and its walls were taking shape.
Site Superintendent Brad Stapleton said parts of the site were underwater after the storms. He joked that crews should have brought kayaks and canoes to reach the building from their trailer and parking area. Stapleton said the project is still on track to meet an August turnover for the next school year.
Principal Darline Winewski said seeing the interior walls rise has made the project feel real. The school will serve 972 students in pre-K through fifth grade. Winewski said it will consolidate families whose children now attend two different schools.
The school’s official name, mascot and colors are expected to be announced next month, Winewski said. The names submitted to the school board have not yet been made public.
