U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar held a campaign event Friday afternoon at the Westchester Regional Library, drawing several Republican leaders to back her bid for re-election to Congress.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise attended, along with South Florida congressmen Mario Díaz-Balart and Carlos Giménez.
Salazar used the event to defend the tax and spending law President Donald Trump calls the “Big Beautiful Bill.” The measure permanently extended individual tax rates that were set to expire. It also cuts federal Medicaid, expands incentives for fossil fuel development and sets aside more than $100 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and border security.
Salazar said the bill was delivering on the economy and argued that Americans would be paying higher taxes without it. Critics have questioned the bill, she said.
Salazar will face Democrat Eliott Rodriguez, a former broadcast journalist, in the contest for District 27.
