Palm Beach County homeowners who cannot afford major repairs may be able to receive up to $100,000 from the county. The Department of Housing and Economic Development is putting $4 million in State Housing Initiatives Partnership funds into its Owner-Occupied Housing Rehabilitation Program, according to BocaNewsNow.com.

The money can cover code violations and problems about to become violations. It can also pay for hurricane hardening, such as impact windows and doors, fix conditions that threaten a resident’s life, health or safety, connect homes to public utilities and make houses accessible.

The program serves extremely low, very low and low-income homeowners, with incomes capped at 80% of area median income. For a one-person household, that limit is $71,950. A family of four can earn up to $102,800. Homes with unpermitted work may not qualify.

The online application portal opens at noon Monday, Nov. 9, and closes at 11:59 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at pbcgov.com/HED. The county will then choose 50 applicants through a random drawing.

Every applicant must first attend a virtual orientation. Sessions are scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Oct. 19, 4 p.m. Oct. 30, 3 p.m. Nov. 3, 9 a.m. Nov. 9 and noon Nov. 18. Residents who need an ADA accommodation should call 561-233-3600 or email HEDVerify@pbc.gov at least five business days before the portal opens.

The county can also provide a list of agencies that may help with applications, though those groups may charge a fee.
