Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board have recovered a portion of an engine from the Learjet 60 that crashed near Greenacres on Sunday. Crews continued excavating the crash site through Thursday, the agency said.

Excavation began late Wednesday. Investigators and local officials have been working to remove wreckage from the crash, which killed nine people.

Debris has been found well outside the main impact area, including on the roofs of nearby homes and buildings, the NTSB said. All recovered wreckage will be taken to a secure location for further examination.

The agency is asking residents who find pieces they believe came from the jet not to keep them, move them, alter them or throw them away. Even small fragments could help investigators determine what happened.

Anyone who has found debris should email witness@ntsb.gov to arrange a pickup. The NTSB asks that people include a photo of the piece if possible.

The agency said recovering as much of the aircraft as possible is critical to determining the cause of the crash.
