A Miami woman says she was cheated out of $250 after a man who agreed to buy her business shelving on Facebook Marketplace left with the goods and never sent the payment. Miami police are investigating.
The woman told 7News that she was selling items from her family business, kept at a downtown Miami storage facility, and needed the money because her husband is seriously ill and undergoing medical treatment. The sale was set for Sept. 18. The buyer wanted to pay through Zelle, saying he had no cash on hand, and he loaded his truck with boxes and shelving before the transfer was made.
According to text messages she shared with 7News, the man promised to send the money before the Jewish Sabbath began that Friday evening. He did not. She sent several messages asking for payment, and she said he later blocked her number. Surveillance stills from the facility show the man walking with her to the storage unit, and police said the images are clear enough to help identify him.
Officer Michael Vega said scammers can exploit social media, payment apps and the good faith of sellers. He advised sellers to hold items until payment arrives. Police also urged anyone meeting a buyer or seller from Facebook Marketplace or similar sites to bring someone along and to check the other person’s profile for red flags, such as no reviews.
