A man was taken to the hospital after he accidentally shot himself while getting off a Miami-Dade transit bus in North Miami on Wednesday afternoon.
North Miami police responded to the area of Northeast Sixth Avenue. Police said the man’s firearm, which they believe was tucked in his waistband, discharged as he stepped off the bus and struck him in the groin area.
Witnesses told 7News they heard the gunshot and saw the man run off near a 7-Eleven. Officers later found him, and paramedics transported him to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. His condition was not known.
Police taped off the bus stop and interviewed witnesses while searching the area. Detectives recovered the firearm and secured it, according to police audio. Officials sent the transit bus back to the scene so investigators could examine it and the surrounding area.
As of late Wednesday night, the investigation into the discharge was still active.
