Opa-locka police arrested a 34-year-old man Wednesday night after officers said they had to struggle to take a rifle away from him near Northwest 22nd Avenue and 139th Street.
Officers approached Demetris Jones at about 9:50 p.m. at an apartment complex, where he was wearing a security guard’s uniform with an American tactical rifle slung around his neck, according to police. An arrest report said Jones verbally and physically challenged officers and took an aggressive fighting stance. An officer ordered him several times to disarm, but Jones allegedly made verbal threats and refused to remove the weapon, the report said.
Shortly after 10:20 p.m., officers retrieved the firearm and arrested Jones, who did not have an active armed security license, according to the report.
Miami-Dade corrections booked Jones at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center near Doral shortly before 1:45 a.m. Thursday, according to county inmate records. He faces four charges: aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, threatening a law enforcement officer with death or serious bodily harm, engaging in security services without a license, and carrying a firearm on duty as a security officer.
The arrest report is the only source for the officers’ account of the encounter, and the charges are allegations at this stage.
