The Coral Springs Museum of Art opened a new gallery on October 9 at 3380 N. University Drive, moving from a low-profile space that the city had long called a “hidden gem.” The new $3.4 million, 8,100-square-foot facility sits inside the Modera/Cornerstone complex, near Sample Road and surrounded by restaurants and shops.
The first major show is “Picasso: A Graphic Journey,” a traveling exhibition of 57 prints made between 1923 and 1972. The works include etchings, lithographs and linocuts, along with a rare canceled copper printing plate, and they come from the collection of Timothy Collins of Los Angeles. The exhibit runs through December 5. The museum describes it as the first major Picasso show in Broward County in more than a decade.
Museum director Dr. Juliana Forero said the museum chose Picasso because visitors would recognize the name. Coral Springs Commissioner Joshua Simmons, who chairs the museum board, said the location is meant to draw people who are simply passing by.
Other displays include “Cages and Collage,” mixed-media work by longtime local artist Janet Gold, and “Art & Evolution,” a look at the museum’s history. Gold will lead a community workshop at the museum on Nov. 12. General admission to the main gallery is free.
The museum’s Creative Studios remain at 2855 Coral Springs Drive, where classes and workshops continue.
