A Coral Springs man was arrested Nov. 1 after a struggle over a handgun led to three shots fired inside a home where children were present, according to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report.
Andrew Ajao, 33, faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, child neglect without great bodily harm and shooting a deadly missile into a building. Police were called to the home around 8:46 p.m. Oct. 31 after a caller reported a man inside with a gun and shots being fired.
The homeowner told investigators she had recently ended a relationship with Ajao, the father of her two youngest children. She said he had moved out about a week earlier but still had access to the home’s surveillance system. She feared him, she told police, so she had friends over that evening to change the locks and disable the cameras.
A friend who saw Ajao arrive warned the woman, who was putting her newborn to sleep, and helped her escape through a sliding door. A man changing the locks told investigators Ajao came in with a black handgun, headed toward the master bedroom and ignored repeated requests to put the weapon away. When the man’s wife stepped in front of the bedroom, he lunged at Ajao, and the two fell and fought over the gun. Three shots were fired before he gained control of it.
Investigators said the children were a short distance away and had a clear view of the confrontation. Officers found two handguns in the hallway, and police documented holes in a bedroom floorboard and the ceiling above a small child’s bed, along with three shell casings. Ajao was booked into the Broward County Main Jail.
