The Benjamin School held a ceremony Friday to celebrate 13 Buccaneer athletes who have committed to play college sports. The group includes athletes in soccer, lacrosse, golf, swimming, track and field and tennis.
The most high-profile signee is Charlie Woods, a state champion golfer who will play for Florida State. His father, Tiger Woods, attended the event and wore a Florida State Seminoles shirt. Charlie Woods is also expected to lead the Buccaneers golf team later this month as it chases a third state title.
Several athletes described the day as a celebration of hard work and the school community. Lacrosse player Jack Kelleher, who will play at Yale, called it a dream come true. Soccer player Phoebe Apple, headed to the University of Georgia, said she was proud of her classmates and excited for what comes next. Swimmer Rachel Nussbaum, who will compete at Johns Hopkins, credited the school with preparing the group academically and athletically.
The signees include athletes headed to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Ohio State, Tufts, Lehigh and several other schools.
