Coconut Creek police are warning residents about a jury duty scam that cost a local woman several hundred dollars.

According to police, a caller told the woman she had missed jury duty and would be arrested unless she paid a fine. The caller directed her to deposit money into a Bitcoin machine. She did so before realizing she had been cheated.

Police said officers will never threaten arrest over the phone or tell someone to pay a fine at a Bitcoin machine. Anyone who receives a similar call should hang up and report it to police, the department advised.

The case is the latest in a string of scams that use cryptocurrency kiosks to collect cash, a payment method that is difficult to trace and rarely recovered once sent.
