Florida Power & Light has installed new solar panels at two Broward County public schools, McNicol Middle School in Hollywood and Sheridan Technical High School in Fort Lauderdale.

The panels are expected to cut energy use by more than 30% at McNicol Middle and more than 40% at Sheridan Technical High, according to the report.

Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn said the project gives students, staff and the surrounding community a chance to learn about renewable energy. He said alternative energy sources can lead to cost savings for the district, and that schools need to keep adapting as society changes.

Students at both schools will be able to learn about renewable energy firsthand while the installations help their campuses spend less on electricity.
