Lauderhill police are investigating after a man and a dog were found dead inside a residence in the Forest Hills neighborhood, just west of Route 441. Few details have been released.

The owners of the unit told CBS News Miami that a woman who rents the home with the man called them two nights earlier. She said she could not reach him and asked the owners to check on him. The owners went to the unit Thursday night, found the windows closed and said they would return Friday morning. The woman did not want to wait, so she called police for a welfare check. Officers found the man and dog inside.

The homeowner said it appears a fire may have started in the kitchen and spread into the living area. Neighbors told the station they reported hearing a smoke alarm and smelling smoke two days earlier, though the death investigation did not begin until Thursday night.

CBS News Miami has contacted Lauderhill police for more information and says it will update the story when new details are released.
